Jan-Mar current account registers surplus of 0.7% of 2011e GDP

Bulgaria’s current account balance for January-March 2011 registered a surplus of €264.6m (0.7% of GDPe*), compared to a deficit of €491.9m (1.4% of GDP) in the year-ago period, mainly due to the positive trade balance and the lower income balance deficit. The trade balance for the first three months of the year was positive, at €47m (0.12% of GDPe), compared to a deficit of €567.9m (1.6% of GDP) for January – March 2010. In March 2011 the trade gap was €17.0m, compared to a deficit of €298.7m for March 2010. Exports (FOB) in January – March 2011 rose 55.6% YoY to €4.76bn, while in March alone exports (FOB) jumped 50% YoY to €1.7bn. Imports (FOB) for the first three months of 2011 increased by 30%YoY to €4.7bn, while imports (FOB) for March 2011 alone rose 19.7% YoY to €1.7bn.
FDI in January – March decreased by €5.1m (0.01% of GDPe) compared to an increase of €52.7m (0.15 of GDP) in Jan-March 2010. In March 2011 FDI decreased by €363m, compared to a decrease of €162.2m in March 2010.
